Rolwaling Trekking is one place to blow your mind to bliss. This taxing trail optically discerns very few footprints and winds through the far-flung, virgin territory of Rolwaling. The mountain vistas and village landscapes shared with cultural gaiety and rural lifestyles integrate into revelations that are simply indelible… for any length of time. The Rolwaling valley trek is something akin to nature’s gem that sits between the lovely Langtang Region of Kathmandu and the ever well-kenned Everest Region to the east. Numerous airy suspension bridges across the gorges oval cut down the climbs. Our journey starts in the region of Rolwaling, which sits south of Tibet. We plod on by Sherpa settlements and thick forests. Sublime vistas of the Mountains give way to Gauri-Shankar at (7145 m/23816ft) a peak named after the mythical Hindu couple Shiva and Parvati. The Sherpas aptly call this valley of Rolwaling.
“The Grave or Furrow” – due to its geography along the Rolwaling Khola that sits deep below the so many ice-giants that hover above this abnormal east-west valley. Rowling is thought to be a beyul, one of only eight sacred, hidden valleys in the Himalaya stretch, which is said to protect the mountain gods. Many strange and legendary stories have done the rounds about this valley, through which the ancestors of the present-day Sherpa once came. It is here that the notorious and celebrated Yeti is assumed to have him home.

Leaving Kathmandu, we will drive towards Gongor Khola via Charikot. Located atop the hill, Charikot offers scenic views of Gaurishanker Mountain, Melungtse Mountain, and other peaks and mountains. We will drive past rustic villages and towns to reach Gongar Khola, which is located near to Jagat village and we trek to simigau village, which is almost a 3 hours of trek, and we will make a gradual ascent to this place.
From Simigaon, our route leads towards North East. Beginning the walk on a gradual uphill slope, we pass through the thick rhododendron and magnolia forests, and the pastures with numerous clearing that are used for summer grazing. In this area, the change from lush Tama Koshi to the mountainside of Rolwaling Valley is very apparent. We will pass through the small settlement area of kyalche and reach the wooden bridge. Crossing the bridge, we will make it to Dongkang where we will stay overnight.
Today, crossing the Rolwaling khola we take a path leading through the jungles on the northern side, the walk heading to a gradual climb & then coming to a clearing passing along little settlements of Nyimare, Ramding and through the farm fields and reaching at Beding for the overnight stop after a good walk of five hours or more with time to visit Beding village where we can do some chatting with the local folks. It is the principal Sherpa village in the Rolwaling area. Situated in a narrow gorge, it is enlivened somewhat by its well-positioned Gompa, comprising of about thirty-six houses. There is a Hillary school in Beding built for the benefit of the poor deprived kids in these remote outposts.
This is a well-earned day for rest; we can just stroll through the village and its monastery overlooking grand views of Mt. Gauri-Shankar and the peak of Melungtse. Or we could just give some time to the children in the village. Maybe we could simply chill out with one of our favorite books – overnight at our lodge.
From Beding onwards, we can feel the increasing altitude and the cold chill from the surrounding high mountains getting into our bones. Our trek today will be a short walk of three hours or more along the Rolwaling River, as we take it easy on this high altitude terrain with its impressive vistas of the surrounding high landscapes and the snow-capped peaks. Our walk continues slowly in order to acclimatize, just before Na the valley opens out into a classic, glaciated U-shape. On reaching our overnight camp at Na, which is a scattered village and a temporary settlement of the villagers of Beding and beyond, it is summer years (grazing pasture) and potatoes are grown hereabouts. There is a roughly built monastery around here. Our camp is made on this grassy field with time to relax and marvel the beauty that surrounds us. Ahead, up the valley beyond Na, the majestic summit of Chobutse 6,689m rises above the Tsho Rolpa at the confluence of the Ripimo Shar and Trakarding glaciers. We just relax & relish these stunning surroundings.
On this day we can explore around Tso-Rolpa Lake one of the highest glacial lake and walk around Monastery and village in the Evening.
After an early breakfast, we will take 7-8 hrs. drives back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we get transferred to our hotel.
